OUR CHALLENGE

Education is one of the key elements for development not only for an individual, but also for their entire families, their communities and countries at large.

Nynke Foundation takes up the challenge to enable adolescents to go to school, to complete their secondary education, to prepare them for a professional life and to eventually contribute meaningfully to growth and development.

The good news is that, globally, since 2000, there has been enormous progress in achieving the target of universal primary education. The total enrolment rate in developing regions reached 91 percent in 2015, and the worldwide number of children out of school has dropped by almost half.

The bad news is that barriers to further complete secondary education remain high for many, with in many countries more than half of the children that completed primary education dropping out for secondary education. As a result, many young adults enter the labour market without the necessary knowledge and skills often demanded.

Factors explaining these inequalities are:

  • The higher costs of schooling of secondary education compared to primary education (which in many countries has become free).
  • Often secondary school, in particularly upper-secondary school are further away from homes, thus increasing transportation costs.
  • Pressure on adolescents to find employment and contribute to household incomes.

For girl’s, the situation is often more difficult. They face pressure to stay at home and work in the households and looking after their younger siblings. Also lack of sanitary pads and teenage pregnancies are factors that contribute to early school dropout.

The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation. In many countries schools closed leaving many deprived from education. With the worsening economic crisis, it is almost certain that many scholars may never return to school.

Nynke Foundation takes up the challenge to enable adolescents to go to school, to complete their secondary education, to prepare them for a professional life and to eventually contribute meaningfully to growth and development.
