In January 2022, Nynke Foundation began operations to support girl’s education in Kenya. Our initial target was to support at least three students through secondary school by providing them with necessary financial and non-financial support. However, thanks to your generous contributions, we doubled the mark and six bright, ambitious but underprivileged girls are now in school with the support of the Foundation. To those who contributed their resources, insights and time, we appreciate you!
The scholarship covers four years of secondary school. Besides, Nynke Foundation exemplifies an education plus approach, recognizing that the development of learners transcends their academic achievement. As such, the foundation mentors’ girls through one-on-one role modelling and setting of personal goals as well as charting a roadmap for their achievement. We believe that these aspects strengthen not only the academic attainment of students but also expands their present and future aspirations.
The girls are selected from across Kenya based on a set criterion. Despite their unique profiles, the girls have one common characteristic; they are all bright, highly ambitious and determined to learn in spite of their underprivileged family circumstances. Take for example the case of Njambi, who sat for primary school exam in 2018 and was not able to join secondary school for three years due to lack of finances. While there was an option to join a day-school close to her home, the nearest school is about 30 kilometers away. With the support of the Foundation, Njambi has finally joined a boarding secondary school and not even the advanced age of 17 years could deter her. Amidst sobs of joy, she is grateful that she will be able to actualize her dream of learning and contributing positively to her community in future.
Nynke Foundation is honored to partner with Il’laramatak Community Concerns; a grassroots organization that supports indigenous Maasai communities, particularly women and girls, to transform their lives through education, community dialogue towards positive social change, and socio-economic development. The organization defends the rights of girls from negative cultural norms such as female genital mutilation and child marriage in Kajiado County. Our partnership seeks to contribute towards keeping girls in schools, which also doubles up as safe spaces from gender-based violence. This year, the foundation has supported girls through this partnership and looks forward to working together to advance access to quality education with for girls.
Certainly, your support is contributing to the transformation of the lives of these girls and eventually their families and communities at large. Over the last six months, Nynke Foundation received an overwhelming number of applications from deserving students across the country. This demonstrates the inherent need and challenge of many more girls who may miss the opportunity to advance their education due to lack of finances.
Our target is to raise EUR 24, 000 in the next six months to support 12 girls. Will you help us raise this target?
